How do I know?
sbk artwork is inspired by the billions of unlikely events which had to have taken place to put you here now, with me. the chaos of the universe divided, duplicated, demolished and developed to create the celestial accident of our existence. as humans, we’re burdened with the need to find meaning in the impossibility but what if we just… didn’t?
Does a butterfly feel out of place? Does a bird compare itself to other birds? has moss ever been envious?
sbk artwork offers a liberating reminder that we’re not in or with nature: we are nature.
our sentience doesn’t graduate us above the status of our fellow organic life. In fact, maybe the belief that we’re exceptional creatures has allowed us to extract and harm the ecosystems of our habitats. but whatever we think, whatever we do, however much we take: we all come from, and will eventually be reclaimed by, one planet in an unimaginably huge and ever-expanding universe.
yet, for all the insignificance we have in common we still manage to live unique lives, entirely alone; from inside the dark electric jelly of our brains which are running at full capacity to compute a world of information by interpreting light and sounds. we can try to relate common experiences through art or language but you will never really know what someone else’s life feels like from the inside. and your life will only ever be experienced by you.
What would it be like to simultaneously understand that you are meaningless in the external universe and that your experience is a universe built of meaning?
how do I know you’re in the right place?
you don’t have a wrong place. you just exist for a while and then you don’t. the rest is nothing and everything.
